Over the past few days, an unexpected debate has been dividing social media users: who would win in a hypothetical showdown between 100 men… and one gorilla? When asked about the topic, Victor Wembanyama gave a clear answer.
For Wembanyama himself, one question haunts fans: will they have to wait until October to see him back on the court, or could he return as early as this summer? For now, it’s impossible to say for sure. The French big man’s health status remains somewhat unclear, though recent amusing vacation footage from Costa Rica appears somewhat reassuring.
That said, the French national team is being very cautious regarding his potential participation in the EuroBasket, which kicks off at the end of August. The Spurs, for their part, would likely prefer that he stay off the court entirely during the offseason so he can hit the ground running for his third NBA campaign. In the meantime, the young Frenchman seems to be keeping busy… on social media.
Wembanyama Gives His Take on the 100 Men vs. 1 Gorilla Debate
Surely keeping an eye on the ongoing playoff series, Wembanyama is also tuned in to trending topics on the internet. The latest viral question—equal parts funny and absurd—asks who would win in a battle: 100 men or a gorilla? Overtime put the question to the French international, who responded with a clear and reasoned take:
Victor Wembanyama: “I’d say 100 committed men would win. But not all of them would come out unscathed, I’ll tell you that.”
So, while he sides with the men, Wemby makes it clear that success would depend on total commitment from all 100 participants. Even then, he says, some would inevitably pay a heavy price.
Many online users actually agree with that view and believe that the physical specimens found in the NBA have what it takes to pull it off. Freak athletes like Victor or even Kevin Durant, thanks to their wingspans alone, could have useful tools to stand up to the gorilla’s raw power.
Speaking of Durant, he was also asked about the debate by Overtime. Unlike those who think he could pose a real threat to a gorilla, KD gave the scenario little credibility and picked the primate to win handily:
Kevin Durant: “Gorilla in 5.”
