Barring a turnaround in fortunes, all indications are that LeBron James will play one more season, still keen to win another ring. But will he do it for the Lakers? It looks like the King wants to be a player.
Now eliminated with these Lakers in the first round of the playoffs, we imagine that LeBron James is the first to be disappointed. He was hoping for a chance to win this championship, especially in one of his last campaigns, but the arrival of Luka Doncic wasn’t enough. In fact, it created a major imbalance in the roster.
Rob Pelinka will be responsible for filling the gaps in the coming months, for example with the recruitment of a pivot and a defender. The Lakers’ two priorities for the coming months are well known. Will they be enough to convince James that he has a chance of winning the title? That remains to be proven, especially as the Akron native refuses to make a full commitment.
LeBron James ready to cast doubt on his future?
Although James’ future in the league should continue, at least for another season, let’s just say that he’s not yet certain of continuing with the Lakers. He has the option of looking elsewhere, and we have to believe that’s his intention. This is surely a roundabout way of putting pressure on the Lakers to achieve an ambitious off-season.
It just so happens that The Athletic has come out with an interesting article today on James’ future. And when the reporters spoke to those close to him, who very willingly agreed to respond, they confirmed that LeBron doesn’t yet know if he’ll continue in Los Angeles. He may well leave to see if the grass is greener elsewhere.
The Athletic: “So would James be willing to end his career elsewhere for a fifth ring? When asked, sources close to LeBron and those around the league didn’t rule out the possibility. And that was before this Lakers elimination.”
It’s actually unlikely that James will ask to leave. The aim of this rumour? Undoubtedly to put pressure on Pelinka and the front office to take action, as he has often done in recent years. LeBron won’t jump ship, especially with the recent arrival of Luka Doncic and the understanding between the two. But be careful not to provoke him in Los Angeles either.
