Luka Doncic, who arrived with the Lakers a few months ago, still has to make a decision about his future soon. Does LeBron James intend to ease the process? Well, not really. In fact, he’s not interested at all.
Very happy since his arrival with the Lakers, Luka Doncic clearly intends to continue his adventure in the City of Angels. The recent elimination doesn’t change this plan at all, although he will technically be a free agent in the summer of 2026, suggesting a possible departure. But he could also sign an extension to show his commitment to the fans.
Any suspense? As it stands, not really, since all the insiders confirm that Doncic likes Los Angeles and sees himself staying there for a long time. Fans will have to wait for a signature to know for sure, especially since as we saw with his trade in February, anything can happen very quickly in the NBA. Nevertheless, this is very positive news.
LeBron James refuses to help the Lakers
And if anyone’s going to follow this story from afar, it’s clearly LeBron James. Many accuse him of interfering too often with the front office behind the scenes for certain trades, to the point of earning the famous nickname “LeGM”. And yet, don’t expect James to lift a finger about any upcoming moves this summer.
So when asked by a journalist if he plans to facilitate Luka’s extension at the Lakers, the answer is straightforward:
LeBron James on the possibility of convincing Luka Doncic to stay: “No, that ain’t my job. I think … I don’t think, I know, Luka knows how I feel about him. And ultimately, that trade happened for the future. That’s not for me. Luka has to decide what he has to do with his future.”
“He’s [26] years old, I’m 40, so he can’t be basing his career off me. That’s just real. But I hope, obviously, [he stays long term]. Laker fans f—ing love him here. L.A. has accepted him. We love him as a teammate, as a brother. But ultimately, he’s got to make a decision for him.”
It’s not yet clear whether Doncic has fully decided on his side, but his recent interviews have set the trend. Everything points to him staying in Los Angeles and, if the franchise is willing, potentially for the rest of his career. That’s good news for the Lakers, although they’ll be relieved once the extension is signed.
