While Mark Williams could have become a Laker, the franchise finally backed down after the physical tests. But what exactly did the doctors find when all this happened? We know a little bit more.

The Lakers have been sorely lacking a true pivot this season. The departure of Anthony Davis, even with Luka Doncic in return, took its toll on the racket, and JJ Redick was never able to find a solution. He could have relied on Jaxson Hayes more often, notably during Rudy Gobert’s famous rampage, but the coach hasn’t changed his mind.

Despite all this, an improvement over Hayes seems necessary in order to aim for the title next season and those to come. It’s not yet clear who the front office will choose, but fans are hoping for a big name to protect the circle and catch Doncic’s passes to the hoop. Mark Williams could have been that player.

Mark Williams’ failure with the Lakers

Williams was expected to become a Laker, as his trade was announced by the country’s biggest insiders. But shortly after the deadline, we learned that the Angelinos had cancelled the trade, no doubt due to a problem revealed at the time of the physical test. We know, for example, that Charlotte’s number 5 has had numerous back problems in the past.

The thing is that Williams quickly played with the Hornets after the cancellation of his trade, stringing together a few 20+ point games. Makes you wonder why the Lakers backed out of the deal. According to Dave McMenamin for ESPN, the staff in Los Angeles obviously found something very wrong.

Dave McMenamin : “Only Mark Williams never wore the Los Angeles jersey after all. He failed his physical and the Lakers ‘couldn’t live with what they saw’ as a source close to the situation explained to ESPN.”

So was Williams simply bad during his preparation with the Lakers? That may be the case. Let’s remember, however, that they signed Alex Len some time later and the pivot also proved to be a total failure. For some fans, it might have been better to continue and validate the trade with Williams rather than stop the whole thing.
