After a season without playoffs, the Spurs are perhaps even more motivated than ever to reach their goal. We’re expecting a bit of movement in the coming months, and this rumor confirms that something is afoot.
Despite a very clear objective from the outset, the Spurs ultimately failed to reach the playoffs. The franchise finished a long way from the postseason, despite having to deal with a number of problems during the campaign. Gregg Popovich came to mind, followed by Victor Wembanyama in February. We could also mention De’Aaron Fox’s late forfeit.
As we learned last week, San Antonio will unfortunately not be returning to Popovich for September. Mitch Johnson is taking over, and fans are hoping that will be enough, along with the return of Wemby, to compete with the best teams in the West. But for that, the Frenchman will undoubtedly need a little help.
A star approaching for Spurs?
The Spurs have quite a few shortcomings if you take a closer look at their season. A shooter would be preferable, with perhaps Cam Johnson as a target, while a defender would also be good for Wembanyama and his partners. San Antonio could also recruit a star to give itself a boost, a rumor confirmed again on Monday.
According to journalist Evan Towns, things are happening behind the scenes. This doesn’t mean that the Spurs will necessarily recruit a star player, but negotiations are taking place. Kevin Durant? Giannis Antetokounmpo? We don’t know, but players are reportedly inquiring about joining San Antonio in the coming years.
@Evtowns : “All the rumors that you heard last week regarding that the Spurs are on the search looking for superstar talent are not only true but the SUPERSTARS themselves are the ones in fact hunting the Spurs. Calls have been made”
So no names yet, but it’s pretty interesting to read. The Spurs have been attracting interest with Wembanyama, who has been attracting a lot of interest on the market since his arrival in the NBA. Good news for San Antonio, even if it doesn’t mean recruiting will be easy. However, the front office seems to have what it takes to attract the big guns if the mood strikes.
