We know that the Lakers are looking for a real pivot this summer, so it remains to be seen who will reinforce this roster. And for Bill Simmons, Joel Embiid would certainly be a good idea. But his proposal may… surprise some people.
With the Lakers’ season now over, one imagines that the front office is already making plans for the months ahead. There’s the draft in June, of course, and then the opening of free agency a few weeks later. And that’s where the Angelinos want to make some noise, notably by acquiring a real pivot.
With Jaxson Hayes and no one reliable behind him, the Purple and Gold are very limited in this area of the game, and it showed against the Wolves. Rudy Gobert easily dominated Game 5, highlighting Los Angeles’ shortcomings. Rob Pelinka knows what he has to do, although the Lakers’ exact target remains unknown for the time being.
Joel Embiid at the Lakers? The proposal that will get people talking
Plenty of targets on the market, although not all of them will be affordable for the Angelinos. We’re thinking of Naz Reid, for example, who would be perfect for the franchise, but who will probably demand a big salary. The Lakers won’t be able to afford him and will have to turn to a low salary or a trade, for example with… Joel Embiid?
Having undergone yet another operation after a failed campaign, both individually and collectively, the pivot’s case continues to cause a stir. Many believe it’s time to turn the page after so many setbacks, as Bill Simmons seems to think. The latter believes that Embiid could bounce back with the Lakers, all with a relatively low offer.
Bill Simmons : “If you put in Austin Reaves with a few expiring contracts, you can get some good players in return. There’s Joel Embiid to watch. The Lakers give away expiring contracts and two first rounders and they take Embiid. You don’t put Reaves in. We don’t even know if Embiid will ever play again.”
A pretty crazy suggestion, with a scenario where the Sixers are clearly looking to part ways with Embiid as soon as possible. Unfortunately for Simmons, that’s not the mentality in Philly. They’re willing to trust Embiid for another season, but this could be his last chance.
