The rumor mill has been churning for some time about an alliance between Victor Wembanyama and Giannis Antetokounmpo in San Antonio. But this theory has taken a turn for the worse following the latest revelations about the two-time MVP, whose future remains uncertain.
It’s perhaps the hottest issue of the 2025 off-season, along with Kevin Durant. Eager to win another league title, Giannis Antetokounmpo seems to have reached an impasse at the Bucks, who have failed to advance beyond the first round int the playoffs for the past three years. Many therefore believe that the two-time MVP could ask for a transfer, in order to relaunch his career elsewhere.
The question is who could then take him in… and the fact is the suitors are numerous. The Spurs in particular are among the most talked-about candidates in the rumors, with some dreaming of an XXL frontcourt formed by Victor Wembanyama and the Greek Freak. All the more so as San Antonio has plenty of resources at its disposal to bait Milwaukee’s leaders.
Giannis interested in big markets rather than the Spurs?
However, nothing is certain at the moment, and although Giannis is apparently interested in the Spurs, he has not confirmed this himself. For his part, journalist Howard Beck suggested other avenues to explore regarding the Hellenic superstar on Zach Lowe’s podcast. And it’s a totally different trend that emerges here:
Does Giannis ask out? If he does, does he have a list? I poked around a little bit a few days ago and the initial thing I got from one person was just like some rumblings that it’s already just the big cities: One of the LA teams or one of the New York teams or maybe Miami, not a big market, but a glamour market, mid-size market.
I think they threw Chicago in there. I can’t remember if Houston came up. It should. So first is like where does Giannis want to go and do they honor that? Because again, back to Damian Lillard, you’re not obligated to honor it.
The mention of Giannis’s teammate is anything but uncalled for, if you recall the circumstances under which Dame D.O.L.L.A arrived in Milwaukee.
Indeed, it was no secret that Lillard wanted to join Miami when he bid farewell to Portland. Except that his superiors preferred to do business with the Bucks, believing they could get better value for him this way. It was a choice that sparked debate because of what the point guard had brought to the franchise over the years, but which serves as a reminder that the NBA remains first and foremost a business.
