As the Warriors kick off their series against the Timberwolves this week, it’s likely that the franchise wouldn’t be there without Jimmy Butler. And yet, it didn’t come down to much when he was traded.
Despite falling at the play-in stage in the final game of the regular season, the Warriors managed to reach the second round of the playoffs. It wasn’t easy against a formidable Rockets team, but it looks like the experience of Steve Kerr’s men made the difference in the end. Stephen Curry, of course, but above all Jimmy Butler.
Because if one player changed the Dubs’ season completely, it was Butler. He’s the one who arrived in a February trade and helped Golden State change the face of their season. He started to help on offense, on defense, and he was also able to help relieve Steph Curry and give him a little more space on the floor. And that changes everything.
The Warriors had doubts about Jimmy Butler
And yet, it didn’t come down to much. Initially, the Warriors had set their sights on Kevin Durant and the trade was very close with the Suns. But KD found out at the last minute and explained to the Warriors that he didn’t want to come back to them. The front office therefore had to choose a plan B, which turned out to be Butler.
But the situation was clearly not ideal for the winger. He was losing momentum and the rumors were damning, with some explaining that he was creating a bad atmosphere in Miami with his statements. The Warriors took a chance anyway, and it goes without saying that they don’t regret it today. But there were doubts.
As the owner explains to Sam Amick, the Dubs weren’t 100% sure of their move:
Joe Lacob : “Oh yeah, we had concerns about Jimmy Butler. But he’s worth every penny.”
It has to be said that Butler was once again decisive in helping the Warriors reach the second round of the playoffs, and it’s not likely to end there for the winger. He’ll be a valuable asset for the rest of the postseason and for years to come. It looks like the Dubs have bet on the right horse. And yet, things could easily have turned out differently.
It remains to be seen whether the Dubs will achieve their goal of winning the title. Draymond Green had promised Stephen Curry the championship.
