After taking full advantage of her few days’ rest, Dominique Malonga arrived in Seattle for training camp. It didn’t take her long to impress her new team-mates, even if she quickly noticed the difference in level with France.
France is gearing up for an exceptional decade in basketball. In the NBA and WNBA, two French-trained prodigies are emerging as potential GOATs of the sport. The first is Victor Wembanyama, pivot of the San Antonio Spurs. He was selected for the All-Star Game in only his second season, proof of his immense talent.
The other great hope of French basketball is Dominique Malonga, No.2 in the latest women’s league draft. An immense interior capable of playing as a fullback, the former ASVEL player will have the chance to play on a team as talented as it is ambitious. She will learn alongside Gabby Williams, as well as legends Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins, which can only be beneficial to her development.

In short, because the French championship ended late for her and she needed a rest, the Olympic vice-champion has just arrived in Seattle. She was welcomed as she should have been by her team-mates, but also by the fans, and it didn’t take her long to show everyone the extent of her arsenal. First practice, first dunk.

Erica Wheeler, the Storm’s substitute point guard, admitted after training that she felt like “jumping on Dominique’s back”, such was the positive energy of her dunk. But don’t expect the Frenchwoman to dominate in her first match, as she admits to having struggled. An adaptation phase will be necessary:
I knew training would be difficult for me today, and it was. The game moves so fast here, we train against men every day, so there’s bound to be a very high level of intensity. It was tough, but I can’t wait to get back into my rhythm. I don’t feel any pressure to be strong right away. The girls are just happy to have me on the team.
