Announced as a summer departure, Kevin Durant doesn’t really know where he’ll be playing from October onwards. The Rockets were favourites for a while, but another franchise may be joining the talks. A soap opera far from over.
It’s likely to be a very long summer for the Suns, who have some important decisions to make in the coming months. The organization suffered a major fiasco by missing the playoffs, and now has to think about who to cut from the squad. Bradley Beal and Kevin Durant are two plausible suitors, but for very different reasons.
The former has never managed to fit in since arriving in Arizona. His performances have been poor, and when you consider that he earns around 60 million a season, that’s obviously a problem for the finances. Durant, on the other hand, could help the Suns with a trade by lightening the payroll and allowing Phoenix to avoid the “second apron”.
Towards the Eastern Conference for Kevin Durant?
The new NBA measure could greatly penalize the Suns, which is why Durant is also in the rumor mill. That and the fact that the franchise isn’t a ring contender, and the summer of 2025 probably won’t change that. But it’s impossible to know where KD will land at this stage, especially given the latest rumors.
For much of the last few weeks, the Rockets were considered the favorites to get Durant back. Since then? Marc Stein has deemed these rumors exaggerated. The competition could be weak at the finish line, even if journalist Barry Jackson thinks the Heat should be in the game. But there is one condition.
@esidery : “The Heat are likely to pursue Kevin Durant, but they will not be offering a significant package of future picks. Miami can make salaries work with Andrew Wiggins, Duncan Robinson’s $19.8 million expiring contract, plus a prospect.”
Enough to part company with Durant? We doubt it. Even if the Suns are going to have to make an effort, we imagine the franchise will want something heavy in return, and let’s just say Wiggins may have disappointed in recent months. At this stage, it’s also possible that KD isn’t going anywhere if no one is willing to make an effort. That still leaves the Wolves and the Spurs.
