Still irredeemable in terms of attitude, Draymond Green should have been ejected in Game 2 against the Wolves. But he was given preferential treatment by the officials, so much so that even some in the NBA don’t understand.

With the Warriors having largely lost Game 2 to the Wolves, it’s clear that Stephen Curry’s absence is going to hurt a lot. But Steve Kerr’s men put in a disappointing performance, especially in the case of Draymond Green. Rather than assuming his role as leader, the inside man made a mess of the finish.

Again author of a dangerous gesture on poor Naz Reid who hadn’t asked for anything, the player took a technical foul (and not a flagrant one?), before continually attacking the referees. He even came up to an official’s face to slip him a few sweet words, not earning him a second technical. A big problem.

Draymond Green spared by referees in an unknown way

A problem because the other players don’t enjoy the same leniency. Depending on the player or the identity of the referee, Green should have been ejected on this sequence for the web, and it’s hard to disagree. But contrary to what the player explains to the media, he sometimes benefits from rather obvious preferential treatment.

This leniency towards the player is a source of conflict within the league. In a broadcast for ESPN this Friday, Brian Windhorst confirms that several people in the NBA are annoyed by the referees’ treatment of the Warriors’ player. This Game 2 against the Timberwolves certainly won’t help matters.

Brian Windhorst : “Draymond Green has 5 technical fouls, 2 flagrant fouls in 9 playoff games. He should probably get more technicals, he was held up against a referee. By the way, it’s a big complaint in the league that Draymond gets away with receiving a technical or a flagrant one.”

And when you see the sad spectacle in Game 2, it’s obvious. The player should have been ejected every day, but it seems that none of the referees wanted to be the one responsible for this choice. With so many penalties in so few games, it’s clear that refereeing is a problem. Looks like Adam Silver still has his work cut out for him this summer.
