Victor Wembanyama, who suffered a vein thrombosis in his right shoulder in February, has not played in the NBA since. But will he be able to play in this summer’s Euros with the French national team? Bilal Coulibaly offered a first indication.

The second half of the NBA season has not been a happy one for the French sophomores. An irremovable starter under Brian Keefe, Bilal Coulibaly has missed the Wizards’ last 19 games with a right hamstring injury. This is not good news for the franchise, but also for the French national team this summer.

Yes, Les Bleus will have their work cut out in a few months’ time, as they go into the Euro as favourites. Fortunately, it would appear that they will be able to rely on Coulibaly, who told Raul Barrigon of HoopsHype :

Bilal Coulibaly: Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. I’ve spoken to everyone in my franchise and no one has objected, so there’s no problem.

Bilal Coulibaly provides an update on Victor Wembanyama’s health

While Coulibaly is clearly at ease with his physical condition in the run-up to the Euros, he could be worried about that of one of his key international partners. After all, Victor Wembanyama joined the Spurs infirmary last February and has been there ever since. The cause is a venous thrombosis in his right shoulder, the extent and evolution of which remain unclear.

Asked by Raul Barrigon, the young French winger, who played with Victor at Metropolitans 92, admitted that he wasn’t very well-informed on the subject. However, he did offer a relatively reassuring indiscretion:

Bilal Coulibaly: I don’t know much about it, but I recently spoke with his parents and they told me he was feeling better.

A statement which corroborates the rare images of Wemby in training broadcast in recent weeks. Even so, it’s hard to say whether the inside man will be able to take his place in the French team’s line-up by the end of August. While we wait to find out more, his former Mets team-mate was rather serene about the impact of this pathology on the rest of his career:

Bilal Coulibaly: Some careers have ended badly because of this, but in those cases, the players were old and it was a long time ago. Now, everything is different. Research has evolved a lot, so I’m sure he’ll get over it.

More important than his participation in the European Championship, let’s hope that this misadventure doesn’t deprive Victor of the bright future he has been promised.
