Open to the possibility of playing somewhere other than the Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo will be making a decision in the coming weeks. And the Spurs could benefit from it, especially after their fine victory this Monday night in the NBA lottery.
We’ll know more in a few weeks about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future, but we already know that Bucks fans may be worried. According to Shams Charania, the player is opening the door to a departure, and it’s hard to blame him. Between the first-round defeat and Damian Lillard’s serious injury, Milwaukee’s future isn’t looking bright.
It’s clear that number 34 lacks support on this team, and knowing that he’s desperate to win a second championship in the coming years, he’s going to want to join a possible contender. That’s not the case with the Spurs at the moment, however, it could become so if the Greek Freak agrees to land in Texas.
Spurs favourites to recruit Giannis Antetokounmpo?
And a lot will change from this Monday. The Rockets finished very far back in the lottery, which may keep Houston out of the running, while San Antonio won big by finishing second, behind the Mavericks. A further advantage to provide the Bucks with a substantial offer if Giannis is ready to leave.
@LegionHoops : “The Spurs now have all the ammo needed to make a substantial offer for Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer.”
To put it simply: if the Spurs want Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer, they can have him. They have the players and the draft rounds to make the necessary offer and convince the Bucks, who will be very greedy in negotiations. But it’s not done yet.
The Mavericks could give up their first pick for Giannis, while other franchises are not willing to give up, like the Nets for example. But San Antonio does have one advantage (as does Dallas), and that’s that it lives in Texas, a state that doesn’t apply any taxes to players’ salaries, quite the opposite of California, for example.
And for some players, this is clearly an important detail when it comes to deciding whether or not to join a destination. According to Sam Amico, Giannis is one of them.
@TheDunkCentral : “Giannis Antetokounmpo is reportedly ‘intrigued’ by the idea of playing in a state with no income tax, per Sam Amico”
