The Lakers are looking for a pivot this summer, and there will be some great opportunities for the franchise in the coming weeks. Even more so after Dallas’ lottery win, according to this journalist.
Looking back at the debacle against the Timberwolves, it’s clear that the Lakers need a true pivot to deter access to the circle and grab rebounds. Jaxson Hayes barely played in the series, which says a lot about JJ Redick’s opinion of his player. So Rob Pelinka knows what he has to do for his team over the next few weeks.
But recruiting a player is one thing, recruiting the right player is another. The Angelinos signed Alex Len this season after the failure of Mark Williams, and we saw the result, with the pivot having no influence on his team. A trade is therefore the best option to find someone of quality, and we may have to look to Dallas.
What trade for the Lakers to recruit a center?
The Mavericks picked up the first pick in the draft, with Cooper Flagg expected to slot in on the wing alongside Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively, according to expert estimates. A great addition for the Texan franchise, of course, but raises questions about the future of the organization and certain players, such as Daniel Gafford.
With Davis, Gafford and Lively, the pivot position is filled, and although Flagg won’t be competing with these players, his arrival will force the Mavs to give him a big salary, including in the long term. The problem? Gafford would like a raise and the franchise won’t be able to keep everyone for Sam Quinn. A departure seems likely.
@SamQuinnCBS : “The Mavs aren’t keeping Davis, Flagg, Lively and Gafford. This is incredible for the Lakers. I have to imagine one of the centers is moving.”
However, Flagg isn’t really expected to evolve at the pivot position, in much the same way as Davis evolves today at post 4. The Mavericks will adapt, but from a financial point of view, the franchise will have to make a few choices in the coming months, starting with Gafford. And with this first pick, the former Wizards player could well be involved in a trade.
Knowing that the Lakers are looking for a good pivot for their racket, Pelinka would be wrong not to contact his good friend Nico Harrison to evaluate the possibility of a new trade together.
