Giannis Antetokounmpo is currently pondering his future, and has been the subject of numerous rumors, some of which have sent him to San Antonio. This has not escaped the attention of a former Spur who is quite confident about his future arrival.
There’s no doubt that this will be one of the most exciting stories of the off-season. Tired of Milwaukee’s repeated failures in the playoffs, Giannis Antetokounmpo is said to have opened the door to a departure this summer. That’s all it took for the NBA world to panic and try to anticipate his eventual destination. As a result, a number of relatively sensible leads have emerged, including that of the Greek… to the Spurs.
Giannis on his way to the Spurs? Danny Green fuels the rumour mill
Only 13th in the West at the end of the regular season, San Antonio is hoping to get into the title fight as soon as possible. And what better way to do so than to pair a star like Antetokounmpo with Victor Wembanyama. What’s more, the franchise has a new asset to send to the Bucks and could benefit from its geographical location, if Sam Amico’s recent indiscretions for Hoops Wire are to be believed:
Sam Amico: The Rockets, Spurs and Nets have the draft capital and young players required to obtain Antetokounmpo via a trade. Houston and San Antonio are even in Texas, where there is no federal income tax. According to my source, Antetokounmpo is intrigued by this fact.
This would be another major argument in favor of Spurs.
Given this information, which should be taken with a grain of salt, Danny Green makes his former franchise all the more of a contender. He declares on the set of NBA Today:
Danny Green: Giannis wants to go to a state where the taxes would be more favorable to him, so Florida is an option. That said, I don’t think Miami or Orlando have the assets to recruit him.
I think he’ll either go to San Antonio or Houston. Either way, he’s going to end up in Texas and knowing that Dallas is going to keep their #1 pick, that only leaves three other teams in the mix, because there are only three states where the taxes are as advantageous in my opinion: Texas, Tennessee and Florida. And I don’t see him going to Memphis because I don’t think the Grizzlies have the assets either.
As you can see, in Green’s eyes, San Antonio is one of the two main favorites in this dossier. It remains to be seen whether the team’s directors really want to recruit the Greek Freak, which is by no means a certainty. And even less so following the revelation offered in the last few hours by a well-known American insider. So be careful not to get too carried away in the Alamo.
