After two great vintages for French basketball, Draft 2025 will undoubtedly be less glorious for our tricolores. That’s not to say they won’t be in demand, as evidenced by an American specialist’s statement on Maxime Raynaud.

These days, the draft is no longer necessarily about level, but rather about potential. Every franchise dreams of recruiting an Anthony Edwards-style talent, young but quickly capable of carrying a team on his back. That’s why France’s Maxime Raynaud isn’t expected in the first round next month. At 22, he’s not the diamond the scouts are looking for.

But unlike other players who will be called up before him by Adam Silver, the man who shone with Stanford in the NCAA could make a contribution from day one to the franchise that puts its trust in him. He proved this on Wednesday at the Combine, crushing his rivals in the friendly match organized between prospects.

Maxime Raynaud sets US specialist on fire

Pitted against other young talents dreaming of joining the NBA, Maxime Raynaud dominated this scrimmage with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists, all at 7/12 shooting and 40% from 3-point range. He caught the eye of all the observers on hand, including Jonathan Givony, the man who covers the draft for ESPN:

Maxime Raynaud is the one who has improved his rating the most today. The French interior has a physical profile similar to that of Jakob Poeltl. On the other hand, he has very different qualities to Poeltl. He put 3-pointers on the move with great ease in the practice game, while handling the ball well out wide, finding his teammates in rhythm with good passes and scoring with his back to the basket thanks to his touch.

But everyone knew he could do these things. What was new on the Chicago floor was the intensity and physical impact he wanted to bring to the basket. He shouted his defensive instructions to his teammates, he made his presence felt in protecting the circle, he crushed small defenders when he had the ball on offense.
