Declared title contenders, the Warriors could do no better than elimination in the conference semi-finals. Golden State is now preparing for the off-season, and according to Shams Charania, two profiles are being actively sought.
What if Stephen Curry hadn’t been injured in the first game of the series? The question has been added to the long list of “what ifs” in the point guard’s career. Failing a definitive answer, Curry watched helplessly as the Warriors were eliminated in Game 5 against the Timberwolves on Wednesday. As for his managers, they were already planning the next moves for the franchise.
Shams Charania announces the Warriors’ off-season plans
Already active at the trade deadline, Golden State’s front office signed Jimmy Butler and revived the team’s season. No doubt they’ll be looking to make similarly impactful alterations this summer to get back in the title race next year. At least, that’s what Shams Charania announced on SportsCenter in the last few hours:
Shams Charania: The Warriors have four future first-round draft picks they can trade. They also have tradeable contracts and could also include pick swaps. In any case, I’ve been told in recent hours that they’re going to be incredibly aggressive on the market to get reinforcements and continue to reshape the supporting cast of their Big Three.
Ambitious for the off-season, the Dubs currently have a squad with a number of projects in the pipeline. According to Shams, two positions are the most important to strengthen:
Shams Charania: I’ve also been told that their priority is to find a winger who can create offensively and defend well, or a pivot to add to this group.
It remains to be seen whether Mike Dunleavy and his assistants will be looking to attract one or more big names, or simply role players to these various positions. In any case, Charania has confirmed the importance of one Californian player in the upcoming negotiations, namely Jonathan Kuminga :
Shams Charania: A key player to keep an eye on in this roster is none other than Jonathan Kuminga. I’m told he’s likely to have a significant number of suitors on the sign-and-trade market. He’s an exciting young winger and both parties expect to discuss this scenario in the coming weeks, before the start of free agency.
As you can imagine, it’s shaping up to be a (very) busy summer in the Bay Area.
