For those who have been following the NBA for many years, Shannon Brown is a name that will bring back memories. An outfielder for the Lakers, he was Kobe Bryant’s backup for his last two titles. Here, he looks back on his experience with the Mamba.

When we think of Kobe Bryant’s Lakers, we think first and foremost of Kobe Bryant himself. No. 24 was omnipresent in his team’s game, and he never hesitated to take shot after shot to lead his team to victory. Whether he had one, two or three defenders on his back, that never stopped him from rising up if he was in a place on the pitch he liked.

Then, when you think of the teammates who accompanied him following Shaquille O’Neal’s departure, Pau Gasol’s name is the first that comes up. Lamar Odom, Metta World Peace and Derek Fisher are not far behind, as is the very athletic Shannon Brown. Thanks to some legendary actions, the fullback has made his mark in Los Angeles.

Shannon Brown talks about Kobe Bryant’s work ethic

Staying in the City of Angels for just over two seasons, Shannon Brown was a useful player off the bench, averaging 8 points and playing defense. A guest on Tony Allen and Zach Randolph’s podcast, he looked back on this adventure and especially on life alongside Kobe Bryant. Unfortunately, he was never able to fulfill every basketball player’s dream.

I was always a hard worker during my career, but when I saw Kobe, he was always doing something to become better. Sometimes he’d watch videos of his opponents, other times he’d be in the gym building muscle, taking shots. He wanted to achieve something great in his career, so whenever you came across him, basketball was always on his mind.

He always gave me the same advice: crush everyone in front of you. You didn’t have to answer that, you just had to do it. I always watched him and copied what I liked about his routine. It was a dream to play with him, but you still had to keep your feet on the ground and be good. I defended him every day in training, but he never wanted to play 1-on-1.
