With a second-round draft pick, the Spurs have a decision to make in the coming weeks. Many think they need to be aggressive, while others think there’s no need to force it. It’s going to be a long summer in Texas.
Still very lucky at the draft, the Spurs have picked up the second and fourteenth picks of the 2025 draft. A nice coup for the franchise, especially when you consider that it waited until the final weeks of the regular season to bring out the tank, after so many problems. But it was worth it, and the front office now has a new weapon in its arsenal.
With Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox and rookie of the year Stephon Castle, the Texans can be confident about the future. But 2026 will be an important year, with the desire to make the playoffs, and for that to happen, they’ll need to improve their roster. So the dilemma today is simple: should they pick a young prospect or draft a star?
What decision for Spurs?
Dylan Harper is the expected second pick in this draft, while Giannis Antetokounmpo would be a nice reinforcement for San Antonio. But the latter is also 30 years old (31 in December), which means he wants to win a title right away. In this particular case, I’m not sure the Spurs would be a very good destination for the player.
So for many, the right decision is simply to temporize in this story. Even if the Spurs want to take the next step, there’s no need to rush and waste assets on Giannis, no matter how talented he is. The Texans have a young roster and can see it through, at least according to this Internet user.
@Heisenburgh : “Spurs have a 21 year old superstar (Wemby), a 20 year old future star (Castle), and the rights to draft a 19 year old stud with many more assets (and Fox) Why is there a need to go championship or bust with Giannis? There is ZERO rush.”
The Spurs could draw inspiration from the Rockets or the Thunder, who waited patiently before dominating the Western Conference (at least in the regular season). Patience is important and recruiting Giannis would inevitably have a negative impact, with the obligation to perform as early as next year. Not sure young players need that.
