While the Spurs have been rumored to be interested in Giannis Antetokounmpo, the franchise may finally opt for Dylan Harper. An insider has provided a few more details to show that the story isn’t over yet.

Take Dylan Harper at number two, or make a bid for Giannis Antetokounmpo? The Spurs have a seemingly simple choice to make ahead of the June draft. The trend? San Antonio should keep its pick in order to take Harper, but there are doubts about his pairing with De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle in Texas.

We’re talking about three guards without a huge shot and needing the ball to exist most of the time. It’s not an obvious fit, but behind the scenes, the Spurs are confirming that the trio can exist together. According to ESPN, the franchise has been getting the message across for a few days now: they want Harper as their second choice.

What decision for the Spurs at the draft?

There are two possibilities at this point. Either San Antonio plays the sincerity card by taking Harper, or the directors play the bluff, forcing teams very interested in Harper to potentially make an offer to the Texan franchise. At this stage, anything is possible for this summer.

Sam Vecenie, meanwhile, explains in an article for The Athletic that it’s probably the first option. Harper’s talent would be much appreciated in San Antonio:

Sam Vecenie : “Most of the sources I talk to around the league think the most likely outcome is that the Spurs do just that: Stand pat and pick at No. 2”

For them, the most important thing is undoubtedly to choose the best talent available in the draft, not the one who best suits the organization’s needs. There’s no question of repeating the mistakes of the Warriors or Kings.

We should therefore go for a Harper draft in any case, even if the Giannis dossier isn’t finished. And if the Bucks decide to rebuild, the young player’s talent would be ideal for starting over in Wisconsin, making the Spurs a natural trade candidate.

That’s why Vecenie added more information to his article:

Vecenie : “The Spurs can’t sell everything to get Antetokounmpo, but they certainly are now one of the teams who could meet the undoubtedly massive price the Bucks would demand if Antetokounmpo becomes available. If I were running the Spurs, it would be hard for me to pass up the opportunity if it presented itself.”

If the Bucks come to the Spurs offering Giannis for that second pick (and other assets, of course), we imagine things could move very quickly.
