With the third pick in the upcoming draft, the Sixers have given themselves a hectic summer. Will they keep him and select a nugget, or trade him in the hope of drafting an established veteran? The answer could determine the future of Guerschon Yabusele’s career.
Last summer, when Paul George signed with the Sixers to back up Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, many thought the franchise would finally make it past the conference semi-finals. But between injuries and disappointments, nothing went according to plan. Nick Nurse’s men went from dreaming of a title to vacation in April.
In their misfortune, the Pennsylvania franchise did receive some good news last week. Indeed, the lottery balls were generous with Philadelphia, as they inherited the third pick in the upcoming draft. There should still be some talent behind Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper, announced as the first two picks.
Sixers active on the transfer market?
The worry is that a youngster like Ace Bailey doesn’t really fit into the group’s short-term plans. Although promising, he’ll need time to contribute to the conquest of an eventual title. That’s why Daryl Morey could trade this pick before June 25. The Athletic has a trade idea:
Would the Nets be interested in a trade including Cam Johnson, picks 19 and 27 in the upcoming draft for Kelly Oubre, Andre Drummond and the third pick? Such a swap would give Brooklyn a nugget on the roster, keep the #8 pick and thus stockpile talent for the future. As for the Sixers, they would inherit an inside-outside player who would help greatly over the next two years.
The Sixers find themselves in a complex situation. On the one hand, they could launch a major rebuild, basing their future on Tyrese Maxey, the promising Jared McCain and a nugget like Ace Bailey or VJ Edgecombe. On the other, they could trade that 3rd pick for a veteran accustomed to NBA life and capable of contributing immediately.
It’s this second hypothesis that’s rumored to be the most popular at the moment, proof that the directors still believe in Joel Embiid and Paul George, who are supposed to be the leaders of the squad. If they bring in reinforcements over the summer, they’ll have no excuse in the event of another failed season and early elimination from the playoffs. Moreover, the arrival of Cam Johnson could mark the end of Guerschon Yabusele’s adventure in Philly.
