After nearly 30 years of dedicated service, Gregg Popovich is no longer the Spurs’ coach. To honor his immense accomplishments with the franchise, the city of San Antonio is preparing to bestow upon him a tremendous honor.

Some departures mark a true turning point for the NBA. For example, the NBA will never be the same again after LeBron James, Stephen Curry, or Kevin Durant retire, as was the case with Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan in the past. But this is also true for coaches, as Gregg Popovich’s recent retirement announcement proved.

After suffering a stroke early in the season, the legendary Spurs coach stepped aside for Mitch Johnson in early November to take care of his health. While fans had long hoped for his return, a relapse a few weeks ago likely prompted Pop to play it safe and call it quits for good. It was the end of an absolutely crazy run with the Black and Silver.

San Antonio Airport to be renamed in tribute to Pop?

27 years as the franchise’s coach, five NBA titles, and a potentially untouchable record of 1.412 coaching wins: it’s impossible to sum up in just a few words just how much of a San Antonio icon Popovich is. The man who coached the likes of David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Victor Wembanyama could be in for a big tribute from the city, according to KSAT:

A city council member is hopeful that the city’s international airport will bear the name of a San Antonio icon. In a council consideration request obtained by KSAT, District 8 councilman Manny Pelaez formally asked the council to consider renaming the San Antonio International Airport (SAT) to “Gregg Popovich International Airport” after the now-former San Antonio Spurs head coach and current team president of basketball operations.

“As our city continues to grow and welcome visitors from around the world through the San Antonio International Airport, we believe it would be a fitting and lasting tribute to dedicate this vital gateway in honor of Coach Gregg Popovich,” Pelaez’s request states, in part. “Renaming the airport to ‘Gregg Popovich International Airport’ would serve as a constant reminder of his extraordinary legacy and the positive impact he has had on our city and beyond.”

In the request, which was submitted on Wednesday, Pelaez proposed that discussion of the potential airport rebrand be added as an agenda item at the council’s next Governance Meeting.

It’s hard to bestow greater honor on the tactician, although the decision still needs to be approved by the city council. However, there’s a good chance the project will come into effect, given his near-mythical status within the city.
