Texas is poised for a very strong rivalry in the coming years, as Cooper Flagg is expected to arrive in Dallas to compete with Victor Wembanyama and San Antonio. But some see the Frenchman joining the Mavs instead!

For years, Texas was home to one of the league’s greatest rivalries. Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki, respectively, engaged in epic battles in the Southwest Division with the Spurs and Mavericks. We’re talking about two of the best power forwards in history, with the former being the undisputed leader at the position.

However, it could well be that the NBA will be entitled to a revisited formula for this confrontation starting in the 2025-26 season. With Dallas having inherited the first pick in the upcoming draft, everyone expects the franchise to set its sights on prodigy Cooper Flagg, announced as the big favorite next June. This would mean that he would face four times a year a certain Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs’ new superstar.

Wembanyama traded to the Mavericks to play with Cooper Flagg?

Suffice to say, such a prospect would be particularly enticing… provided it actually happens, of course. And in this regard, some have serious reservations, explaining that the Frenchman might not want to spend too long in San Antonio… and that, on the contrary, he could try to ally himself with Flagg at the regional rival:

@knifetalkmavs : Wemby will request a trade and play with Cooper Flagg on the Mavs within 3 years. Nobody with superstar potential wants to waste it in San Antonio. San Antonio is a bottom 5 market that hasn’t been competitive in over a decade. All they have in SA is their filthy riverwalk.

A rather savage dig at San Antonio, but one that overlooks a crucial detail: Flagg isn’t a Dallas player yet. Granted, there’s little chance the franchise will take another player with the first pick… but as we’ve seen in recent months, you have to expect anything with them. Especially since, as Spurs pundit Dusty Garza points out on X, the Mavs’ situation may not be all that idyllic:

Dusty Garza : Most #1 picks enter burning houses, they have to help save. Cooper Flagg is stepping into a haunted one- no top picks for years, no clear championship path, just a Nico run estate trapped in purgatory. That’s his bleak reality. Is it any wonder he’s weighing his options??
