The Spurs have been considered candidates for superstar acquisitions this summer, including Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant, for some time now. But an American website has suggested another avenue for the Texans to explore…

With a 34-48 record, San Antonio hasn’t exactly shone this season, but has shown significant improvement over the previous season (22-60). Without the premature end of the season for Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox, the franchise might have even had a chance to compete for the Play-In a bit longer. Suffice it to say, their ambitions won’t be scaled back during the summer break.

In addition to holding the second overall pick in the draft, the Spurs are also expected to engage in some superstar trading. Giannis Antetokounmpo could be courted to form an absolutely terrifying duo with Wembanyama, while Kevin Durant’s name has also been mentioned in Texas, as the latter attended college there and is the French center’s childhood idol.

Lauri Markkanen, the Spurs’ fallback solution on the trade market?

That said, the two superstars mentioned above won’t be easy to acquire, so the Texans must prepare for having to move to Plan B. The question is who the franchise will pursue, as it appears to be focusing on reinforcements on the wings. As such, Fadeaway World recently mentioned a possibility leading to the Jazz:

Lauri Markkanen offers a blend of size and shooting that would seamlessly integrate with the Spurs’ existing roster. Averaging 18.6 points and 6.3 rebounds in the 2024–25 season, Markkanen’s ability to stretch the floor would open driving lanes for Fox and create space for Wembanyama to operate in the post. His presence would diversify the Spurs’ offensive options, making them less predictable and more difficult to defend.

Defensively, Markkanen’s size allows him to contest shots and rebound effectively, supporting Wembanyama in controlling the paint. His mobility enables him to switch onto smaller players when necessary, maintaining the team’s defensive integrity. Markkanen can also occupy both forward spots, giving head coach Mitch Johnson a chance to experiment with his lineups.

This is a name that’s been circulating in trade rumors for a while now, particularly those involving San Antonio. The problem is that Markannen is certainly a former MIP, but he’s still far from the caliber of Giannis or KD. And he wouldn’t necessarily be any cheaper, since he has four years and nearly $200 million left on his contract… Suffice to say, his arrival wouldn’t be the ideal scenario.
