The Spurs have a choice to make with the draft coming up. But behind the scenes and according to ESPN, the decision would already be made barring a twist. Looks like there won’t be any real surprises in the weeks to come.
The Spurs’ acquisition of a second-round draft pick, always with the best of luck, gives them a new asset with which to bounce back in the Western Conference. The franchise wants to make the playoffs for 2026, with Victor Wembanyama, but don’t count on them rushing to do anything on the market according to ESPN.
This clearly implies that the arrival of Giannis Antetokounmpo, or any other star, is in jeopardy. Whether we’re talking about the Greek Freak or Kevin Durant, we’re talking about great players whose goal is to win right now. Except that San Antonio is still a long way from that, with a young and inexperienced roster. It should get even worse in June.
Spurs made up their minds a long time ago
Barring any last-minute surprises, we’re well on the way to drafting Dylan Harper. His fit isn’t obvious with De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, but his talent is. It’s hard for the Spurs to snub the young back, who should have a great opportunity in Texas, and who also dreams of playing with Victor Wembanyama.
So ESPN is expecting Harper to come to Texas in June. Here’s what Jeremy Woo explains in his recent article:
Jeremy Woo : “Though trade speculation has swirled around San Antonio and this pick since lottery night, at this stage of the process, it appears to be simply that. The Spurs want to get Wembanyama to the playoffs, but don’t have to rush into a blockbuster deal, be it for Giannis Antetokounmpo (should he become available) or a different star.”
“San Antonio has the future draft capital to keep Harper and still significantly upgrade its roster at a lesser cost. Rival teams expect the Spurs will entertain their options, but the wide assumption is Harper will be the pick, barring a blockbuster move.”
Harper is set to join the Spurs next month, giving the franchise a nice core of young players to better dominate the NBA in the future. This is undoubtedly the best option, especially as the Spurs have ample opportunity to pick up a star in the coming years. Wembanyama must appreciate that.
