While it’s not yet official, Cooper Flagg is set to get his NBA career off to a great start in Dallas. Coach Jason Kidd already has an idea of how he plans to use him on the court… and it could be surprising, to say the least.

Now that they hold the first pick in the 2025 draft, the Mavericks’ plan seems obvious: select Cooper Flagg before another franchise gets their hands on him. Touted as a potential generational talent, the young big man is expected to arrive in Texas at the end of June, barring any surprises. Interviewed on the DLLS Mavs show, coach Jason Kidd clearly expressed his enthusiasm on the subject:

We love that kid from Duke. I’ve been studying him a little bit and so, that’s the answer (laughs). That’s the real answer, I mean, this draft is is really talented. You have some young man at the university of Rutgers (Dylan Harper, ndlr) and so it’s exciting. But, I’m studying the young man that used to play at Duke.

Jason Kidd’s surprising role for Cooper Flagg

While not explicitly naming the former Blue Devil to avoid getting into trouble, the 2011 champion makes no secret of the fact that Flagg is indeed Dallas’ target. Three months after Luka Doncic’s departure, the franchise has the opportunity to rebuild its future thanks to the young American, who could learn from some of the league’s best players, as he’ll play alongside Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, to name a few.

The question remains, however, how to integrate him into a roster that could be shaken up this summer. And above all, to determine what position he will play… We know that Davis does not want to play center, and this role does not suit the future rookie either. However, J-Kidd has already given some indications… and they could very well surprise fans.

@FlaggUpdates : REPORT : Jason Kidd mentioned potentially playing Cooper Flagg at the SG position for the Mavs. Kidd more specifically mentioned a lineup of: Kyrie/other PG while Kyrie is out, Flagg, PJ (Washington), AD and (Dereck) Lively.

It should be remembered that Flagg is still 2.06m tall and weighs over 100 kilos…

It’s unclear whether Kidd is joking, but the idea may be to capitalize on the youngster’s many talents. Capable of playing point forward and defending multiple positions, Flagg impresses with his versatility, and the coach knows how to manage such a player. After all, he was the one who brought Giannis Antetokounmpo to prominence at the Bucks…
