Taken to task by some of their fans following the departure of Luka Doncic, the Mavericks have an opportunity to redeem themselves thanks to the 1st draft pick they’ve obtained. But for a veteran of the league, they’d be better off sacrificing him in exchange for a star.
Was it a real twist of fate, or a secret backstage plot? The question has been much talked about in the United States over the past few days. Whatever the case, the Mavericks once again find themselves at the center of attention on the NBA planet. And for good reason, as they have inherited the first pick in the next draft and will now be able to get their hands on the coveted Cooper Flagg.
However, according to DeMarcus Cousins, this scenario, which some believe to be set in stone, is not going to happen. Indeed, he told on Run It Back:
DeMarcus Cousins: I like Ace Bailey. Personally, I think he should be the 1st pick. I think he’s the closest prospect to a Tracy McGrady. But anyway, I don’t see Nico (Harrison) keeping that pick.
Mavs ready to trade Cooper Flagg for a superstar?
Subject to a lot of criticism since the Luka Doncic trade during the season, Nico Harrison has shown that he’s not afraid of making big moves. And for Cousins, he’s reportedly about to sign a new one, namely passing on Cooper Flagg in order to attract a big name. Giannis Antetokounmpo would obviously make sense, but not as much as another equally tempting option, according to the former pivot:
DeMarcus Cousins: Truth be told, drafting Kevin Durant wouldn’t be a bad move for Dallas to make. They should part with the #1 pick and trade for him. After all, Nico has already stated loud and clear that the window to win a title is three years. And Cooper Flagg doesn’t fit into that window, unlike Kevin Durant. In any case, I’m sure he’d be willing to trade this 1st pick.
As a reminder, the Mavs had already expressed some interest in Kevin Durant a few months ago. Harrison would have liked to add him to his squad at the trade deadline, while the Slim Reaper seemed destined to leave Phoenix. Some insiders even considered his arrival in Dallas inevitable, before negotiations between the two teams finally broke down.
Could the GM and his assistants use the first pick to finally close the deal? In any case, Cousins seems to think that such a move would be in line with the franchise’s short-term project. However, there’s no guarantee that the arrival of KD, who will soon celebrate his 37th birthday, will enable the Texans to reach the Larry O’Brien Trophy next year.
