While the league launched an investigation after the duel between Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark, no information has leaked for several days. And the testimonies are doing the WNBA no favors at the moment.
While the Fever largely dominated the Sky in their first WNBA match of the season, the game was marked by a number of controversies. There was, of course, Caitlin Clark’s flagrant foul on Angel Reese, which drew the ire of Internet users who felt that the referees had been too harsh. Admittedly, the foul didn’t seem all that important.
There were quite a few comments on social networks, but the whole thing took another turn after the game. The WNBA issued a statement announcing the launch of an investigation and condemning the racist, discriminatory and hateful comments against the players. The league is obviously right, but the question remains: why the press release?
Fans demand apology for Caitlin Clark and the Fever
Because several days later, no one knows why the WNBA decided to launch an investigation. Did a fan make racist remarks against Angel Reese, as the league suggests? Possibly, but nothing has yet been confirmed. An obvious lack of transparency that raises important issues concerning the WNBA’s communication.
The Fever players, including Clark, condemned these remarks by fans, as did the Sky players, of course. But after several days, it’s unclear whether such acts actually took place. For many Internet users, it’s clear that the WNBA launched an investigation after the taunts and whistles against Reese, particularly after a missed throw, which would be problematic.
@nosyone4 : “Tyler Marsh (Sky coach) explained that the Sky were not aware of any hate speech during the game and that they discovered this with the press release. The WNBA reportedly launched its investigations because of social networks.”
There’s nothing wrong with the WNBA’s press release, but perhaps the timing wasn’t right. After several days, there were no sanctions to report and no news from the league.
@big_business_ : “It’s…very…bad…”
Has the WNBA jumped the gun? Does the league intend to punish people for whistles or because some celebrate when a player misses? For the league’s sake and credibility, it better not.
