Voted MVP after a tremendous season with Oklahoma City, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is now entering a new stratosphere. This includes the financial aspect of his career, as a colossal contract awaits him in the coming months.

The battle for the MVP award had been raging for months between Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The former became the first center in history to average a triple-double in a season, but had already won the trophy multiple times. As for the latter, his record was still completely blank, and the award seemed like a sure thing, especially after his wild season with the Thunder.

Ultimately, it was the Canadian guard who was voted the best player of the 2024-25 season by the voters. It must be said that the former Clipper had arguments in his favor: not only did Oklahoma City finish the regular season with the best record in the league (68-14), but its superstar cracked a stat line not seen since Michael Jordan with 32.7 points, 5 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Historic contract incoming for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

The league’s leading scorer and MVP winner, Shai finally got his crown after narrowly losing to Jokic last year. The young player’s future looks absolutely bright, and not just on the court, as he’s currently playing in the conference finals. Analyst Bobby Marks revealed that the Thunder franchise player will be able to fill his pockets like no one else in history:

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander met the super max criteria (All-NBA in 2 out of 3 years) last offseason but was ineligible to sign because he was short of the years of service criteria. He is eligible this offseason to sign a four-year $293M extension with OKC.

Because he won MVP (and this would have applied to being named All-NBA this year), SGA is now eligible to sign a five-year $380M extension but would have to wait until the 2026 offseason.

A colossal fortune awaits SGA, but it remains to be seen whether he will actually be able to obtain it.

Indeed, such a contract would inevitably pose a financial problem for OKC, which will have to extend the contracts of a number of players at high prices in the coming months. Luguentz Dort, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, and even Cason Wallace: Mark Daigneault’s roster will soon be entering its prime, and it’s not certain that everyone will be retained. Unless the franchise player makes some sacrifices…
