Important decisions ahead for the Lakers, who need to improve their roster in the coming months. And for this analyst, one player absolutely must be traded if the Angelinos are to have any real chance of winning the championship.
Now that summer is upon us, the Lakers can settle down away from distractions and take stock of the current roster. With the arrival of Luka Doncic, it’s clear that the roster has been weakened in the interior sector by the loss of Anthony Davis. Rob Pelinka therefore needs to find a solution to recruit a center, and if possible a really good one.
Christian Koloko ? Alex Len? These centers arrived last season, but for a franchise that wants to win the title, they’re certainly not enough to achieve that goal. The Angelinos need to think bigger, with Naz Reid, Nic Claxton or Mitchell Robinson, for example. Even Brook Lopez could be an interesting solution.
An inevitable trade for the Lakers?
But this player has to be Doncic-compatible. That’s why other fans want Daniel Gafford, who once played with the Slovenian for the Mavericks. Whatever happens, the arrival of a center is necessary, but in return for what if he has to be traded? For Bill Simmons, it’s Austin Reaves who absolutely has to go.
The fullback, who has been a real surprise in Los Angeles in recent years, may have reached his limits. He’s still a really good player capable of putting up great statistics, but his total absence against the Timberwolves in this first round of the playoffs is not digested by some people. Simmons, for his part, has made his choice.
Bill Simmons : “Reaves is getting traded. That one I would bet on. … I think they’re gonna turn him into something. It’s just the logical thing. … You’re not gonna be able to win 4 rounds with [LeBron, Luka, Reaves] as your top 3. They need to turn him into a center.”
Not all fans will agree, but for many, Reaves is certainly not untouchable. If there’s a quid pro quo, his departure is probably not a bad idea. The problem being that the league isn’t as enthusiastic as the Lakers about the player’s talent.
