Victor Wembanyama, who has largely dominated the Spurs defense this season, will end the campaign without a single award. An anomaly for the fans, especially given his statistics with Spurs.

Absent since February due to a venous thrombosis, Victor Wembanyama has remained active since this sad event. According to him, he can still train, but at a very light pace, and continues to move around. He was spotted at a WNBA game recently and hopes to return to his normal life over the summer, with the doctors’ approval of course.

In the perfect scenario, the Spurs welcome Victor back to training camp in September. It’ll be the best way to get back into shape and work with his partners, including possible rookie Dylan Harper, expected as the second pick in the draft. Suffice to say, the fans can’t wait to get their hands on him.

No reward for Victor Wembanyama

Unfortunately, all is not perfect at this stage, and for good reason: Wemby won’t be entitled to any awards in this campaign. Despite a clear dominance on defense, an average of almost 4 counter-attacks and a monumental impact, the Frenchman is missing out because he hasn’t reached the 65 games to be eligible, and that’s upsetting.

As the StatMuse account reminds us, however, Wembanyama is far ahead:

@statmuse : “Victor Wembanyama this season: first in blocks, second in stocks (blocks+interceptions). Still not eligible for All-Defense.””

This is where the new NBA rules show significant limitations, as Victor would have deserved to win something. His dominance was far too insane in this campaign to totally ignore.

@EbagNews_ : “He would have had the DPOY.”

@channelmurasaki : “That’s why the NBA rule is silly.”

@AlfLefebvre : “All this in just 46 games, it’s totally insane.”

@_BaThomas : “All the DPOY contenders were fighting for second place until he was injured.”

Frustrating for Wembanyama, who should have won his first career DPOY and been unanimously named to the All-Defense First Team. But things didn’t go according to plan for the Frenchman, who intends to take his revenge next season with the Spurs.
