Back in Europe with the firm intention of winning the first major trophy of his career, Evan Fournier failed to reach the EuroLeague final. Beaten on Friday by Monaco (68-78), he made no secret of his deep sorrow afterwards.
If there’s one Olympiakos player who had nothing to reproach himself for after this match, it’s him. Evan Fournier pulled out all the stops in the EuroLeague Final Four on Friday. After his best game since returning to Europe with 31 points (10/18 on target), the French guard lost to Monaco (68-78) and left the Etihad Arena in tears:
Tellement fier d'Evan Fournier, c'est rare de trouver des mecs qui aiment leur sport de cette façon, il a tout donné, il a rien à se reprocher… pic.twitter.com/UOw3MaGOlH

Evan Fournier devastated after losing to Monaco
Deeply affected by this setback, Fournier had, after all, made a EuroLeague title one of, if not the main objective of his season. Interviewed afterwards by Greek TV channel Novasports, he opened up about this real disillusionment:
Evan Fournier: I’ve already had a very long career, during which I’ve played a lot of big games.
I won two silver medals at the Olympics, another one at the Euro, two bronze medals at the World Cup and I played at a very high level in the NBA, but I really wanted to celebrate something. I can’t even describe how hard I worked for this. I didn’t want to leave the court. It was an emotional game. I left my heart on the floor and sometimes emotions take over.
Disappointed on a personal level, Vavane also expressed his great sadness to the Greek fans who had flocked to Abu Dhabi for the occasion:
Evan Fournier: When I think of all the fans who have come all this way to be here…. They spend a lot of energy and money on this team to follow it on the road. The way they’ve supported us all season has been really great. It’s been one of the best experiences of my life. So to fail at this stage and not give them what they deserve is really painful. I apologize to them.
It’s worth noting that the Tricolor international will need to get back into the swing of things. His team will contest the match for third place this Sunday afternoon, before facing Panathinaikos next Friday in the opening round of the Greek championship finals.
