The Lakers have a decision to make this summer, with the possible trade of one of their key players. But this decision is far from unanimous, and yet the contractual situation is becoming very complicated.
With the recruitment of a pivot on the horizon, the Lakers hope to have a real chance of winning the title next season. But to get a real quality post 5, Rob Pelinka knows he’ll have to go through a trade, possibly dropping Austin Reaves into the mix. His situation is complex, as the fullback is much appreciated by his managers.
But is it really deserved? Reaves has some very good statistics, but he largely disappointed in the playoffs against the Wolves. Many are worried that the summer of 2025 is the right time to sell him to another franchise, as he may have reached his ceiling as a player. But there’s another important detail.
Austin Reaves soon to be dropped by the Lakers?
If Reaves is going to have to take responsibility on the floor and prove that he can get along with Luka Doncic, it’s also because he has a personal decision to make: extend with the Lakers this summer, or become a free agent in 2026 to get a bigger contract with the Angelinos, or elsewhere. And that’s where it gets complicated.
Because Reaves is going to demand to be paid, and not just a little. A contract that could exceed 30 million according to Bleacher Report. But should so much money be given to a player who’s dispensable and not responding in the playoffs at the moment? The question is worth asking for the fans.
Eric Pincus : “Reaves is nearly sure to decline his $14.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season to explore unrestricted free agency next summer, seeking a salary in the $30 million starting range. The most he can extend for ($19.5 million) is far short of that number. Any team acquiring him would need behind-the-scenes assurances that he’d re-sign at a pre-arranged price, although they wouldn’t be technically legal or binding”
That’s a lot of money for such a player. Reaves puts in solid performances most of the time, but with Doncic, we’ll have to ask ourselves whether AR15’s presence is still mandatory in the City of Angels. If not, a trade this summer is definitely not out of the question.
