Despite doubts and possible injuries, the Mavericks want to win the title next season. But with Kyrie Irving injured for a long time to come, a recruitment is essential. Nico Harrison is reportedly already a priority on the market.
Will the Mavericks manage to play for the title in 2026? Let’s just say that if Nico Harrison wants to converse his position, it would be a good idea. The GM has already been heavily criticized for his Luka Doncic trade, while that of Quentin Grimes was equally ridiculous. His handling of the medical staff subsequently confirmed that Harrison was making a bit of a mess of things.
But in 2026, his roster might just save him. With Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg, if picked right in the draft, Dallas should be a tough team for next season. But there are also doubts about injuries. Davis continues to occupy the infirmary, Klay Thompson is no longer at his prime and there’s the Kyrie Irving case.
A recruit for the Mavericks?
After surgery and a serious knee injury, Irving won’t be back until 2026, according to Shams Charania. The point guard is expected to be out for most of the season, but could return at the beginning of the year to build up his strength before the playoffs. However, Dallas would like to replace him at least temporarily to limit the damage, according to Jake Fischer.
RealGM reported this rumor on its website:
“The priority in free agency for the Dallas Mavericks is re-signing starting point guard Kyrie Irving. After that, the team’s next priority is adding someone who can start as the lead ballhandler until Irving returns from the torn ACL he suffered last season.”
A starter, therefore, capable of replacing Kyrie and potentially helping him when he returns. A profile not easy to find on the market.
“Dallas is looking for a fill-in starter until Irving returns. Ideally, that player will then be able to move into a complementary role, either playing with Irving or backing him up.”
Offering a starting role, even for a few months, would be attractive to many players. But is Dallas still an attractive franchise on the market when we see the behavior of Nico Harrison? It’s a question worth asking. Let’s just say that if a player has a choice, it’s doubtful he’ll decide to make the Mavericks his priority.
