Steve Kerr and Stephen Curry have been a legendary coach-player duo in Golden State for over a decade now. The former got very candid about his relationship with the superstar in a recent interview.

Much to the Warriors’ dismay, the end of the franchise’s greatest era is slowly approaching. Stephen Curry is now 37 years old, and with each passing season, he loses one more chance to win a championship. Suffice it to say that after such a fabulous career, played entirely within the Bay Area team, his retirement will have the effect of an earthquake.

Drafted in 2009 by Golden State, the steamroller began rolling in 2014. This date also marked the arrival of Steve Kerr as coach, who didn’t hesitate for a moment to bet everything on Baby Face and his legendary three-point shot. A bet that more than paid off with four championship titles, a unanimous regular season MVP, and a Finals MVP.

Eleven years later, the duo is still well established with the Dubs, despite Curry being aging and Kerr frequently being criticized for his tactical choices. What hasn’t changed, however, is their relationship and its proven way of working. The coach spoke about this on The Tom Tolbert Show:

It sounds trite, but everybody’s gotta be honest with each other because there’s so many ways that things could go wrong. There’s so much BS in the NBA, just the drama and every player is going through stuff. There’s contract stuff, and of course, everyone’s got ambition. If you’re not honest with each other and don’t have real conversations, it’s going to fall apart.

I try to elicit a lot of conversations collectively with the team, and individually with guys. The easiest guys to coach are the ones who are most honest, and Steph comes to mind immediately. There is no BS; everything is very matter-of-fact.

You have to differentiate what’s non-negotiable and what’s negotiable. To me, all the basketball stuff is negotiable… You go in with an idea, but you got 15 players, and these days, 15 coaches. You got ownership, front offices, everybody is chiming in. And so, there’s a lot of compromise that goes into the basketball stuff.
