After more than seven years with Sacramento, De’Aaron Fox joined the Spurs at the last trade deadline. But while his contractual situation forces fans to question his future with the franchise, he was honest about it.

On the day of his transfer, the Spurs were in 12th place in the West and already lagging behind the conference’s Top 10. De’Aaron Fox knew that his mission was to help his new team close the gap and at least qualify for the Play-In Tournament. However, he was unable to do so, as the Texans finished the regular season in 13th position (34-48).

The subject of many hopes in San Antonio, Fox didn’t get off to a dream start. In addition to Victor Wembanyama’s long-term absence, Fox himself saw his season come to an abrupt end with a left hand injury. Inevitably disappointed by this scenario, the star point guard nevertheless managed to draw some positives from it, in comments reported by Hector Ledesma of ClutchPoints :

De’Aaron Fox: At the time, we really wanted to push and give everything to qualify for the playoffs, but fate decided otherwise. You know, something always happens in this league, so you always have to be prepared for the unexpected. So we decided it was better for me to have the operation right away, rather than wait until the season was over.

It’s a very good thing because Vic and I should be able to play again at the same time during the summer. This will allow us to get together and work together.

Impatient at the idea of fine-tuning his chemistry and automatisms with Wembanyama, “Swipa” will however have other sources of concern during the off-season.

He will also have to consider his contractual situation, as he could potentially test the free agent market at the end of next season. However, he is keeping his fingers crossed that Spurs will offer him an extension by then, as he wants to continue in their ranks beyond 2026:

De’Aaron Fox: I hope they’ll offer me a new contract before mine expires, yes.

In all likelihood, Brian Wright and his assistants will grant this wish in the coming weeks. After all, they wouldn’t have put together a swap deal as substantial as the one that attracted Fox, only to let him walk free a few months later. It remains to be seen when these negotiations will take place.
