The Spurs have a choice to make with the draft coming up, and it’s arguably an important one for the future of this organization. And despite what’s at stake, San Antonio is said to have already made up its mind behind the scenes, and has been for some time.

The Spurs’ name will be on the lips of many over the coming months, as they look to make the playoffs next season. The return of Victor Wembanyama will obviously do them a lot of good, as will De’Aaron Fox and the rise of the new rookie of the year, Stephon Castle.

We understand why fans are confident, but as we’ve seen over the course of this campaign, they’ll need reinforcements too. The Western Conference is very serious, and the Texans are still a long way from being able to compete at this stage. Some fans therefore feel that the Spurs need to recruit in trade, if possible a big star available.

What decision for the Spurs at the draft?

Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant have often been linked with the Texan franchise in recent months, but the trend isn’t necessarily in that direction today. San Antonio picked up the 2nd and 14th picks in the upcoming draft, and may ultimately retain both. The aim is simple: to keep adding young talent in order to move forward.

Pouncing on a superstar is the best way to go too fast and make bad decisions. But the Spurs are renowned for their patience, which is why this news reported by Marc Stein won’t surprise anyone. According to the insider, the Texans have every intention of retaining this valuable pick in June.

Marc Stein: “New season for the rookie of the year. Since winning the lottery on May 12, San Antonio has been making it clear to rival teams that they intend to save the second pick of the draft for next month, with the selection of Dylan Harper.”

Barring a turn of events, perhaps with a crazy offer, the Spurs have every intention of adding Dylan Harper to their roster in a few weeks’ time. One more fullback for the franchise, alongside Fox and Castle. The fit isn’t obvious, but given the player’s talent, far ahead of the competition, it’s hard to blame them.
