Dallas can no longer count on Luka Doncic, but the franchise’s title ambitions haven’t vanished. That’s why the management could try to acquire an NBA champion and, incidentally, one of Anthony Davis’s former teammates.
2024-25 was a season full of twists and turns for the Mavericks. But not necessarily in a good way… NBA finalists just a year ago, they didn’t even make the playoffs after long being on track to qualify. But everything changed in early February with the trade of Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis.
Without the Slovenian superstar, and with The Brow and Kyrie Irving quickly joining the injury team during these weeks, the Texans had little chance of going far. Unsurprisingly, fans resented management, particularly GM Nico Harrison and co-owner Patrick Dumont, viewing Doncic’s forced departure as an unforgivable betrayal.
That being said, the latter continue to affirm that the franchise’s ambition is to win a championship, their only title dating back to 2011. And if the conditions are right, there is indeed room to do great things in Dallas with Davis, Kyrie and a slew of players who are members of the finalist squad in 2024. The problem is that Uncle Drew will be absent for many months due to his serious knee injury.
Jrue Holiday on the Mavericks’ radar
In other words, recruiting a point guard who can replace the 2016 champion seems to be a priority. And it’s another champion who has caught the Mavs’ attention, according to insider Marc Stein. According to him, the front office has reportedly turned its attention to a Celtics player who beat them a year earlier and whose future is currently unclear:
(via Fadeaway World) : The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly eyeing a bold move this offseason, as they are “expected to explore” trade scenarios for Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday, according to veteran insider Marc Stein. With Kyrie Irving recovering from ACL surgery and set to miss a significant portion of the 2025–26 season, the Mavericks are in urgent need of a reliable ball-handler and defensive anchor.
Experienced and acclaimed everywhere he’s played, Holiday checks all the boxes. Not only that, but he already has an established relationship with Anthony Davis, having been teammates in New Orleans years ago. His arrival could give The Brow confidence, while some fear the superstar won’t last long in Texas.
