Already crowned MVP a few days ago, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is also still gunning for a championship with the Thunder. And this could be just the beginning for him and his team, as he recently made clear with a terrifying reminder.
Will 2025 be his year for good? It certainly looks that way. Already one of the NBA’s top players for several seasons now, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has taken on a whole new dimension in the league in recent months. So much so, in fact, that he inherited the MVP trophy, the symbol of a campaign that was historic in many respects and deserved to be rewarded.
Indeed, despite the admirable competition offered by Nikola Jokic, the Canadian guard won over most voters in this poll. His impressive individual consistency enabled his young team to finish with a stunning 68-14 record. It remains to be seen whether the latter will go on to win the title in his wake… and why not establish a dynasty.
Shai’s scary warning for Thunder’s rivals
Winning Game 4 against the Timberwolves on Monday (128-126), the Thunder took another step towards the Finals and now lead the series 3-1. In addition to Shai (40 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assists), Chet Holmgren (21 points) and Jalen Williams (34 points) played a big role in this success. And that certainly doesn’t reassure the competition, as the MVP explained in press conference:
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: We still have so much room for improvement, and that’s the scary part about it. I’m 26, and that seems old compared to the other two. They’re only 23 and 24. They haven’t even approached their prime yet. But both of them are already showing their talent on the floor and I can’t wait to see them play in the future. It’s clear that they make great allies.
It’s true that OKC’s youth is proving worrying for the rest of the league. Already formidable in its current state, its Big Three has certainly not finished improving and is in perfect harmony. It’s not likely to be weakened any time soon, not even for financial reasons. ESPN expert Bobby Marks was just blowing the whistle on X:
Bobby Marks: For the people that think extensions for SGA, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren will break up this OKC team. I have news for you : it won’t.
Add to that other role players who are also very young and Nikola Topic, who has yet to play a single minute in the NBA, and you’ve got an explosive cocktail for the future.
