Facing two Frenchwomen on Tuesday, Marine Johannès reminded them who the boss of French basketball is. In full confidence, the fullback pulled out all the stops with shots that only she knows the secret of in the WNBA. Inevitably, she earned the compliments of Breanna Stewart.

The WNBA season has been underway for a few days now, and not all Frenchwomen are in the same boat. In Minnesota, for example, in a franchise with its sights set on the title, Marième Badiane is relegated to a place at the end of the bench, with just a few minutes of playing time when her team’s victory is already assured. A status which does not reflect her importance to the French team.

With the Golden State Valkyries, on the other hand, Janelle Salaün and Carla Leite are far more involved in this young team’s system. They could quickly become the favorites of a Chase Center that’s just begging to be rocked. Who knows, maybe they’ll have the influence and popularity of Marine Johannès, who regularly sets Brooklyn alight. She showed them live this Tuesday:

Breanna Stewart praises Marine Johannès

Against her two compatriots, Marine Johannès had her best game of the season, scoring 18 points, all from behind the arc and all in spectacular fashion. She perfected her copy with 4 steals, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 counter, confirming her role as X-factor for the defending champions. At the press conference, Breanna Stewart, the group’s superstar, paid tribute to her.

Our bench and its depth will put us head and shoulders above the competition. We know we can bring on any player we like, so there’ll be consistency in the game. I’m pleased that everyone is keeping their confidence, whatever the mistakes. Up until now, Marine has been trying to find her rhythm, but at home, she has confidence. She knows that if she puts in one shot, then another, the fans are behind her.

We’re all delighted to see her shoot with such confidence. On some of her 3-pointers, I feel like the defense was totally in her face. I knew her one-legged shot was coming, she had to get it out in this game.
