The Warriors are dealing with a thorny issue with Jonathan Kuminga. And with the franchise set to make a decision in the coming weeks, one outcome seems obvious. But it may not please everyone.
Beaten by the Wolves in the second round of the playoffs, the Warriors fell short of their objective. Their goal was clearly to win the title, especially with the addition of Jimmy Butler, who completely revitalized Steve Kerr’s men. But their defense was not good, not to mention of course Stephen Curry’s absence, which was very costly.
On the bright side, the Dubs already have a “Big 3” to fall back on in the future, with Curry, Butler and Draymond Green in the racket. They believe they have the means to win the championship this way, but Steve Kerr and the front office have an important file to manage this summer: that of Jonathan Kuminga, soon to be a free agent.
Decision in sight for the Warriors
Kuminga will be a free agent, at least partially. He’ll be a restricted free agent, which means the Dubs will have the final say and the ability to match any offer to retain Kuminga if that’s the team’s wish. This is the most likely scenario, since losing the player, with no consideration in return, would be a pretty big fiasco.
Does the player want to stay? That’s a good question. Because with Steve Kerr’s choice to bencher him very often and a recent tackle from the coach, who believes he can’t win if he gets a lot of minutes, we imagine he sees his future elsewhere. Anthony Slater, for The Athletic, thinks that an extension remains the best solution in any case.
Anthony Slater : “Team sources have been hinting that, because of these market and financial restrictions, there’s a likely world where the most obvious and prudent path is for them to bring Kuminga back and figure the rest out later.”
Bring Kuminga back rather than losing him for nothing, and then see with a potential trade. It’s the right idea for the Warriors, who could lose the player for nothing in other scenarios and that would be a problem. Especially with Kerr’s tackling, it’s highly doubtful that No.00 will be in Golden State for long.
