Ready to actively recruit this summer to win the title in 2026, the Lakers are confident they can do it with Luka Doncic and LeBron James. But this former Los Angeles player doesn’t share that optimism.
A center or even two, plus a winger capable of defending: that’s what the Lakers want to recruit this summer as a priority. Rob Pelinka confirmed this to reporters a few weeks ago, which shouldn’t surprise anyone. As we saw against the Wolves, the Angelinos have a major problem within their racket.
How do we settle this? Either through free agency or a trade, which would undoubtedly bring a more ambitious player onto the market. Whatever happens, we can expect some action from Los Angeles in the coming weeks, all in a bid to win the championship for 2026.
Can the Lakers win this championship?
There’s nothing more natural than to have this ambition with Luka Doncic and LeBron James, and yet we can tell you that this optimism isn’t shared by everyone among observers. In a recent podcast, Danny Green simply believes that this duo won’t win anything together. And he explains just why he thinks so.
Danny Green : “I don’t think Luka Doncic and LeBron James will win a championship together. They’re explosive offensively, but there’s a lot missing defensively. I don’t know how many years LeBron has left, but it’s very hard to win a title when your best player is 40. He’s so good, no matter what anyone says.”
“But the guys who can make up for their shortcomings, especially on defense, are a long way off now. And it’s hard to find a guy who can replace that. I think Luka is just going to take LeBron’s place, so the long term is good. But I don’t think they can win today. LeBron will be 41. He can still average 20/30 points, I don’t see them winning anything with this formula.”
And he’s not the only one to think so, especially as James reportedly intends to take his player option at over 52 million, limiting the Lakers in the event of a draft. Amazing for what could be the last year of his career, but the King clearly has other goals in mind.
