As a four-time NBA opponent of Victor Wembanyama, D’Angelo Russell has regularly delivered some strong words on the subject. And that’s exactly what he’s done again in recent hours, offering an opinion he says he realizes is shocking.
For several months now, discussions concerning him have no longer centered on his performances on NBA floors. Victor Wembanyama hasn’t pulled on a Spurs jersey since February 12, the victim of a venous thrombosis synonymous with the end of his season. But while the date of his return seems to be becoming clearer, some people continue to marvel at his talent.
In fact, D’Angelo Russell didn’t wait for this singular context to praise his young French counterpart. Indeed, he was already one of his greatest admirers last year, and had no hesitation in delivering some extremely strong words about him. It’s fair to say that his opinion hasn’t changed since then… and may even have improved almost beyond recognition.
D’Angelo Russell lays it on thick for Wembanyama
Recently in China as part of a promotional campaign for his manufacturer, Russell took the opportunity to appear on the Backyard Podcast. Asked to name his GOAT, it didn’t take long for him to offer his answer and name his GOAT… Wembanyama:
D’Angelo Russell: Who’s my GOAT? Oh, Wemby. Victor Wembanyama!
In itself, the crowning of the young Tricolor inside player was enough to surprise many. Including DLo’s interviewer, who found it hard to take him seriously. After all, there are far more credible candidates for this status, including Michael Jordan. But as far as the current Nets point guard is concerned, Wemby has (already) earned such an honor:
D’Angelo Russell: Sure, he’s not Michael, but he’s slick.
Intense, Russell even took the initiative to go one step further and predicted that Victor could be the subject of another consecration in the future:
D’Angelo Russell: I’m telling you right now, and I know it sounds crazy, but I already gave him his flowers last time. This is a big statement but if the NBA were to change its logo, it could be him. Or Kobe.
As you can imagine, the former Laker was clearly struck by Wembanyama’s talent during their first four meetings. However, he made sure to express this once and for all before closing this conversation:
D’Angelo Russell: I’m really high on Victor Wembanyama. I think he’s really special.
