Victor Wembanyama has had a great season, at least in the short time he’s been on the floor with the Spurs. And despite the NBA’s snub with its new rules, the Spurs were keen to reward him.

Victor Wembanyama didn’t make the All-NBA Defensive teams and didn’t earn a DPOY, yet he richly deserved his place given his prowess. With unrivalled dominance in the paint and an average of almost 4 counters, the Frenchman was a real eye-catcher in his sophomore season. But his illness and the NBA’s new rules changed all that.

If you want to have a chance of winning trophies and awards, you now need a minimum of 65 games to do so, which means that the slightest serious injury can put an end to your hopes. It’s not the most popular rule among fans, and for good reason: it sometimes denies players who really deserve to win.

Victor Wembanyama rewarded at Spurs

Look at Evan Mobley, who won the DPOY this season. A nice trophy for the Cavaliers player and well deserved, except that he would never have won it if Wembanyama hadn’t had his health problems. Many fans think he should have won in any case, so Spurs decided to make a gesture.

46 games and 176 blocks: even without playing for months, Wemby finished well ahead of the competition. There’s no doubt that he would have won the DPOY without his health problem, but we can count on him in 2026 to try and put things right.

Among fans, this feat is inevitably much appreciated. For many, the real DPOY is in San Antonio, and that’s logical given its dominance.

@Demontics22 : “He’s bouta be getting dpoy so much we gonna be begging for someone else to finally get it”

@Wemby_Muse : “DPOY in our hearts”
