Since it was announced that Giannis Antetokounmpo was considering leaving Milwaukee, the Spurs have emerged as one of the favorites to welcome him should he leave. However, a new suitor could well play a nasty trick on them and win the bid.
Has the time come to step up the pace of their project and pull out all the stops in the transfer market? The question must have been haunting the Spurs management for weeks. After all, they have a choice, since they have the 2nd pick in the next draft and could therefore get their hands on a talented new prospect. Or trade him for an established star.
Several big names are likely to pack their bags this summer and strengthen San Antonio’s squad. Among them, Kevin Durant, but also Giannis Antetokounmpo, whose future with the Bucks has never seemed so uncertain. This explains the numerous rumors linking Antetokounmpo to the Texan franchise over the past few weeks… but which may well remain at this stage.
An Eastern franchise in a good position to get Giannis?
According to some journalists, it would be in Antetokounmpo’s best interest to continue his path in the Eastern Conference and snub the Spurs this off-season. At the same time, several insiders have recently reported the Raptors’ desire to make a big splash on the market. The Greek Freak could therefore end up in Toronto, and even more so if we take into account the speech delivered by Toronto Star’s Doug Smith:
Doug Smith: I don’t know if it’s going to happen, but I know there’s mutual interest between Antetokounmpo and the Raptors. What remains to be seen is the price tag.
For several years now, Raptors president Masai Ujiri has been keen to make Giannis the star of his project. This would obviously not leave his target unmoved, who could be recruited in exchange for a quality package according to Smith :
Doug Smith: I also think the Raptors are in a very good position to pass on an attractive offer that won’t ruin their franchise or roster. I’d say the logjam on the wing would allow them to part with two of Gradey Dick, Ochai Agbaji, Ja’Kobe Walter, RJ Barrett and Jonathan Mogbo without depopulating their team or depriving them of promising young players to develop.
Add to that the fact that they own all their draft picks, and so could part with, say, four of them without running out later.
As you can see, the Raps have some serious arguments to make in this matter, and shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to use them if the Greek does indeed ask to leave.
