Both the Lakers and Warriors are in the market for a center this summer, but the latest rumors could have one of them on the run. And that’s the Pacers, now in the NBA Finals…
There’s going to be a lot of action in the NBA this summer, according to observers. Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo will potentially change franchises, while the Warriors and Lakers are looking for a big center forward to revive their franchises in 2026. And let’s face it, there are quite a few leads at the moment.
Daniel Gafford, Brook Lopez or Mitchell Robinson: there are some interesting names to recruit, not forgetting Naz Reid if he decides to leave the Wolves. But he could re-sign a new contract in Minnesota, while Myles Turner is another plausible name. The center is set to play in the Finals with his Pacers this week.
Impending market disappointment?
But what’s really interesting in Turner’s case is that he’ll be a free agent this summer. And knowing that he’s having a great campaign, essential to the Pacers’ success, he should get a nice pay rise compared to his current 20 million. It remains to be seen whether Indiana will succeed in keeping him around a little longer.
Given the current trend, we’re tempted to say yes, Turner will be staying with the Pacers for a few more years. The collective success is there, and according to Brian Windhorst, his team is already prepared to make a financial effort to keep this group together, notably by paying the luxury tax. Turner should therefore not be a target this summer.
Brian Windhorst : “From what I am told, the hope and belief and whatever is that ownership will greenlight them going a little bit into the tax for a little while.”
So, if they have to make an effort to keep Turner in the immediate future, the Pacers should make their move. A disappointment for the Warriors and Lakers, listed as suitors for the center in the event of his departure and even considered favorites to sign him. Not surprising given the player’s talent, but barring any surprises, he’ll be continuing his adventure alongside Tyrese Haliburton for the time being. Given their playoff run, it seems only natural.
