While Cooper Flagg seems destined to play in Dallas, many haven’t given up hope of him playing in San Antonio. A huge trade has been suggested to both Texas franchises for him to become Victor Wembanyama’s sidekick.

The Southwest Division should be the stage for a formidable rivalry in the coming decade, and just as it was in the 2000s, it will be tied to the Spurs and the Mavericks. While Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki once engaged in epic battles on the NBA courts, Victor Wembanyama and Cooper Flagg are now expected to take over starting next season.

The former is coming off two spectacular seasons in San Antonio, and while 2024-25 ended prematurely for him due to a deep vein thrombosis, all looks to be in order for the coming year. As for the latter, he is the overwhelming favorite for the first pick in the 2025 draft, held by Dallas, which intends to rebuild around the young Duke prodigy, after saying goodbye to Luka Doncic a few months ago.

The five-pick draft trade to send Cooper Flagg to the Spurs

On paper, it seems obvious that they’d face off four times a year, a very enticing prospect for the league. But what if the two young big men were to become teammates? Many have dreamed of seeing Flagg arrive at the Spurs, in order to form a frontcourt with incredible potential alongside the Alien.

Of course, that hope went up in smoke on lottery night, with Dallas pulling off an enormous surprise with a less than 2% chance of getting there. But not everyone gave up, at least not on ESPN. Reporter Zach Kram offered a trade suggestion to help this crazy scenario come to fruition:

  • The San Antonio Spurs receive: 2025 No. 1 Pick
  • The Dallas Mavericks receive: 2025 No. 2 Pick, 2025 No. 14 Pick, 2027 Atlanta Hawks’ First Round Pick, 2030 First-Round Pick Swap Rights (Returned to Mavericks)

For the sake of Dallas management, we hope they will flatly reject such an offer if one were to be made to them by their division rivals. Especially after the Doncic trade…

Indeed, despite some concerns about his ceiling, Flagg is considered a generational player and perhaps even the future of American basketball. The Mavs would have their new golden goose, perhaps even more attractive to the local market than Doncic was. It’s no coincidence that since the night of the lottery, the franchise has stated that it has no plans to part with the first pick.
