Determined to continue with the Lakers and win a title, Luka Doncic has made it clear that he is happy in Los Angeles. He’ll have the opportunity to prove it with a major signing this summer.
Now with the Lakers, Luka Doncic never thought he’d leave the Mavericks last February, especially with a trade. But Nico Harrison decided to take a different route to try and win the championship, and number 77 paid the price. He has to deal with the consequences of this trade, which are also financial.
Before this deal with the Angelinos, Doncic was probably going to sign a supermax contract over the summer. But because of this trade, the NBA no longer gives him the opportunity to earn such large emoluments. He’ll have to settle for less with the Lakers, with a maximum of 229 million for 4 new years this summer.
What choice for Luka Doncic’s future?
But that’s up to the player. Doncic could very well refuse and land quickly on the free agent market next summer, or sign a slightly smaller extension to sign a big contract with the salary cap increase. And we know just what the current trend is for the Slovenian.
Even if he doesn’t sign for the maximum, Doncic should sign a new deal with the Lakers, according to Bobby Marks. The ESPN expert believes that the best move is to re-sign with the Purple and Gold on a 3-year lease, including a player option on the final year. The perfect scenario to recoup some of the money lost with the Mavericks.
@LakersBetter : “Bobby Marks predicts Luka Dončić will sign a three-year, $165M deal with the Lakers this offseason, including a player option for 2028-29. Giving him flexibility to hit free agency early and recoup what he lost leaving Dallas.”
That’s the likely scenario, and it’s good news for both the player and the fans. Number 77 will quickly have the opportunity to seal his future for the next few years, allowing Rob Pelinka to build the Angelinos’ next squad with greater peace of mind. We’ll have more news over the summer, as this extension may be offered from August onwards.
