After a year with the Spurs, Chris Paul is set to change franchises in the coming weeks. It’s not yet official, but the point guard is opening the door when discussing his future. His priority? His family.

One year and then gone? Chris Paul is well on the way to signing elsewhere than the Spurs when free agency opens in July. He had originally signed for just one year, with the intention of helping San Antonio and Victor Wembanyama before perhaps a new adventure… or retirement. But the latter scenario is clearly out of the question.

While he has yet to make an official decision on the matter, Paul should be back by October. He still feels capable of contributing with a franchise, but it shouldn’t be the Spurs according to the latest echoes. It has to be said that the Texan team has changed its vision with the arrival of De’Aaron Fox, the explosion of Stephon Castle and the possible drafting of Dylan Harper.

Chris Paul off to another team?

For Paul, the departure seems rather logical. He would be an interesting addition for the younger players, but his presence is no longer needed on the floor. What’s more, CP3 would like to spend more time with his family, who have lived in Los Angeles for many years. Paul spoke to Pat McAfee about his desire to be more present as a father.

Chris Paul : “It’s with my family more than anything. My son just turned 16. My daughter is 12. The past six seasons, I’ve lived without them. I go to San Antonio, Phoenix, Golden State — they were in Houston with me — Oklahoma City… I’ve been around a few teams, but I’ve been away from them the last six years. It’s a little different. That’s the conversation.”

Paul : “Well, I don’t think I want to play for a while. I’m being honest with you, I want to be Dad. I still love to play. I was up in the gym at 6 am this morning. Yesterday, I was in the gym. Day before, I was in the gym. It’s crazy. You know, my daughter actually hoops now, so before I flew out here, I was in the gym with her for 20 minutes. With kids, sometimes you gotta do short sessions, so I was in 20 minutes doing ball handling with her, and it was priceless. You don’t get that time back.

So when it comes to making a decision about his future franchise, Paul could put his family first and sign in California, and even move closer to his family in Los Angeles. The Lakers wouldn’t say no to his contribution, and the presence of LeBron James could certainly come into play.
