With the off-season fast approaching, a number of hot topics are already becoming clearer. Kevin Durant, for example, is said to be interested in joining the Spurs. But what would his duo with Victor Wembanyama achieve?
While the Giannis Antetokounmpo issue remains unclear, the Kevin Durant issue is becoming increasingly clear. Still very good on an individual level, the legendary No.35 no longer necessarily has the shoulders and legs to single-handedly carry a team to the top. That’s why the Suns failed to qualify for the playoffs this season.
Lastly, his average of 26.6 points, 6 rebounds and 4.2 assists could still make a huge contribution to an ambitious team in search of real offensive alternation. The Spurs are said to be the most advanced in negotiations, and it’s hard not to be seduced by the possible association between KD and his disciple Victor Wembanyama.
Jeff Teague talks about the Kevin Durant/Victor Wembanyama duo
The main interested party would not be opposed to a move to Texas, as the latest reports from the USA explain that the winger is sharing his enthusiasm with those close to him. But what would this unusual pairing really achieve? Would San Antonio join the bandwagon of Western Conference favorites? Jeff Teague spoke out on his podcast:
Do you really want to see Kevin Durant with Victor Wembanyama, or would you rather see him on the Knicks’ side? I know a duo made up of the two would be monstrous, but I don’t really want to watch the Spurs. Everyone knows I love De’Aaron Fox, I’m a big fan of Wembanyama, and I love KD. It would be an absolutely crazy trio. But I don’t want to see Wemby lose influence in San Antonio’s game.
I’d rather see Wembanyama take crazy 3-point shots and do all those unique things. With KD, he’s going to change. And KD deserves to be in a city like New York. He was great in Brooklyn, he deserves to play under the brightest lights in the league. He should retire on such an experience. The Knicks are used to having older players.
Jeff Teague has only one fear if Victor Wembanyama is paired with Kevin Durant: that the Frenchman will no longer have room to express himself as he sees fit on the court. KD is renowned for his accuracy and his love of the beautiful game, so he won’t necessarily let his young teammate drop bombs from midfield. But isn’t this the frame he needs to turn the corner?
